Fault tracing a vehicle with a software problem

This procedure describes how to fault trace a VDS protocol-based vehicle with a software problem. The procedure covers how the fault tracing work flow for VDS protocol-based vehicles is presented and provides information about the ranked list and the actions to perform. The procedure also covers how the feedback function in the ranked list is used.

This procedure is only applicable for VDS protocol-based vehicles.

This procedure is based on a case where a customer has a problem with a function in the vehicle. The customer provided a description about the symptoms and the vehicle, an XC90 with model year 2016 is connected to VIDA through Wi-Fi.

 

Connect the vehicle and add CSC

  1. Since the vehicle is connected to VIDA through Wi-Fi, it is available under the Connected Vehicles tab directly. Connect the vehicle by selecting the Connected Vehicles tab and clicking the Connect button.

  2. ð

    The vehicle is connected and assigned its own tab. The Diagnostics tab is opened by default.

  3. Expand the Work List menu item in the left-hand menu panel and select Customer Symptom Codes.

  4. ð

    The Customer Symptom Codes page is shown.

  5. Type a search string in the search field for the CSC you are looking for and press [Enter] on your keyboard.

  6. ð

    The CSC matching the search criteria are shown in the right-hand panel.

  7. Select CSC by ticking the checkbox and click the Add to List button.

  8. ð

    The CSC is added to your currently active work list.

 

Check the ranked list

  1. To start fault tracing the vehicle, select Fault Tracing in the left-hand menu panel.

  2. Now that you have selected a CSC it can be used in the ranked list on the Fault Tracing page. The ranked list shows the components that are most likely to be the source of the problem. You should always work from top to bottom in the ranked list.

  3. In this case, there is a technical journal to check on top of the ranked list.

 

Read technical journal

  1. Click the technical journal.

  2. ð

    The technical journal is opened.

  3. Verify that the technical journal is valid for the current vehicle and case.

  4. ð

    In this case the journal seems to be valid for the current vehicle and describes a fault that is valid. According to the technical journal, the problem can be remedied by performing a software download to a control module if there is an upgrade available.

  5. Since you have not yet done any actions to remedy the fault, click the Done button.

  6. ð

    The technical journal is marked as read. This is indicated by the icon. The information in the technical journal suggested software download as a possible solution. In the ranked list you can see that there is an upgrade available for the control module in question.

 

Upgrade software

  1. Click the control module upgrade in the ranked list.

  2. ð

    The ranked list is replaced with a document containing a description of the control module upgrade and a button for software download.

  3. Click the Start software download button.

  4. ð

    The Software page is opened and the required software part is automatically added to the order queue.

  5. Click the Purchase button to start the purchasing process.

  6. ð

    A pop up where you need to enter an order reference appears.

  7. Enter an order reference and click Ok.

  8. ð

    The progress of the purchase is shown in a progress bar.

  9. When the purchase is completed and the software is retrieved, order details about the software product are shown in the lower part of the right-hand panel.

  10. If the voltage is too low, connect a battery charger. Otherwise, VIDA will prevent you from starting the download. Click the Download button to start the downloading process.

  11. To start downloading the software to the vehicle, click the Start button.

  12. ð

    The software is being downloaded to the vehicle.

  13. When the download is completed, click Ok.

  14. ð

    The Purchase Software view is shown again and the software has been removed from the order queue and is no longer available in the list of Upgrades.

 

Verify the function and provide feedback

  1. Return to the fault tracing by clicking the Diagnostics tab.

  2. Verify that the software download solved the problem. When a problem is solved the Fault Found button should be clicked. This feedback is very important for Volvo Cars in order to improve fault tracing based on actions performed to remedy faults.

  3. Click the Fault Found button.

  4. The upgrade action has now been performed. Since you clicked the Fault Found button, the icon is shown next to the action in the ranked list. This icon indicates that the action solved the problem.

 

Erase DTCs

  1. If you have multiple CSC you should now continue with the next one. In this case you only have one CSC, therefore you should now continue by erasing the DTCs. Select the DTCs tab.

  2. ð

    The DTCs tab is opened.

  3. Click the Erase All button.

  4. ð

    All confirmed as well as unconfirmed DTCs in the vehicle are erased.
